Most Trunk Lockouts Are Solved Through the Cabin
This surprises people, so it is worth explaining. On the large majority of modern cars the trunk has no independent external lock at all — it opens electrically, from a button on the driver door, a lever in the footwell, the fob, or a release inside the cabin. That means the job is really a door lockout wearing a disguise.
So the sequence is: open the driver door the ordinary way, with an air wedge and a reach tool, then use the car's own interior trunk release. On cars with fold-down rear seats there is a second route, reaching the trunk space directly through the cabin once the seats drop.
The practical upshot is that the trunk lid itself is usually never touched, which is exactly what you want. Trunk lids carry the lock, the latch, the wiring for the lights and often the reversing camera, and forcing one is expensive.
The Cars Where a Trunk Lockout Is Genuinely Different
A minority of vehicles do have a fully separate trunk lock with no interior path — some older sedans, some coupes with a fixed rear bulkhead, and a few models where the trunk is deliberately isolated from the cabin for security. On those, the job changes and it is worth knowing before anyone is sent out.
That is why we ask for the year, make and model on the call rather than just the address. It takes ten seconds and it is the difference between a straightforward job and a wasted trip for both of us. Hatchbacks and SUVs are almost always straightforward, because the load space and the cabin are the same volume — once a door is open, so is the boot.

Usually yes, via the fold-down rear seats, which give direct access to the load space once a door is open. If your particular vehicle has neither an interior release nor folding seats, tell us the year, make and model on the call and you will get a straight answer before anyone is sent.
Can you open the trunk without opening a door first?
On most cars there is no reason to, because the door is the intended route to the trunk release and it is the least invasive one. Going at the trunk lock directly means working on the latch and the lock cylinder, which carries more risk to a part that is expensive to replace.
The trunk will not open even with the key. Is that a lockout?
Probably not. If you have the key and the trunk still will not release, that is usually a failed latch, a broken release cable or a dead actuator — a repair, not a lockout. We will tell you that on the phone rather than charge you to come and confirm it.
