How a Locked Car Door Is Opened Without Damage
A car door is not sealed shut. Its top edge presses against a rubber weather strip, and that joint can be spread by a small, controlled amount without harming anything. An inflatable wedge goes into the upper corner of the door frame and is pumped by hand until there is a gap of a few millimetres — enough to pass a tool through, not enough to deform the door or damage the seal.
A long reach tool then goes through that gap. It is a coated steel rod with a shaped tip, and depending on the vehicle it presses the electronic unlock button on the door panel, hooks the interior handle, or lifts a lock post. The coating matters: bare metal against a door card leaves marks, and marked plastic is the tell-tale sign of an improvised job.
What never happens: nothing is drilled, the lock cylinder is not picked apart or replaced, nothing is pried against painted metal, and the glass is not touched. Done properly, a lockout leaves the car exactly as it was.
Why You Should Not Try It With a Coat Hanger
Behind a modern door card sit the side-airbag wiring, the window regulator, the side-impact sensor and the lock actuator linkage, all packed into a couple of inches. A hanger pushed blind into that space does not find the lock — it finds wiring and linkages, and the repair routinely costs several times what the lockout would have.
There is a safety dimension too. Poking metal around a side-airbag sensor while your head is next to the door is not a risk worth taking to save an hour.
The other improvised route, breaking a window, is worse than people assume. It is not just the glass: tempered side windows shatter into thousands of fragments that end up in the door cavity, the seat rails and the carpet, and they keep turning up for months.

How long does it take to open a locked car?
Once someone is standing beside the vehicle, most standard cars are open in a few minutes. The variable is travel, not the work itself — a garage level, a large lot or heavy traffic adds far more time than the door ever does.
Do you need the vehicle registration?
We need you to confirm you own the car or are authorised to drive it, and to show identification. We do not require the registration document itself, which is helpful given it is usually locked in the glovebox of the car you cannot get into.
Will opening the door set off the alarm?
Sometimes, and it is not a problem. On a car with a factory alarm the horn may sound when the door opens. It stops as soon as the key or fob is back in your hand, which is the next thing that happens.
Can you open a car with power locks and no manual lock post?
Yes. On cars without a lock post the reach tool goes to the electronic unlock button on the driver door panel instead, which is if anything easier. Nearly all modern vehicles fall into this category.
