Keys Locked in a Running Car — NYC and Nassau County
The engine is on, the doors are locked, and the keys are inside. This is the one lockout that is genuinely time-sensitive, and it is treated differently from a parked car for good reasons. If this is your situation, call first and read afterwards.
Why a Running Car Lockout Is Urgent
Three things are true at once and none of them improve with time. The vehicle is burning fuel with nobody in it. It is unattended and running, which in a public place is an obvious theft risk and in most of New York is also a violation. And if it is in a driveway, a garage or anywhere partially enclosed, it is producing exhaust continuously in a space that may not clear it.
There is also a slower problem. A car left idling long enough will eventually run its tank down and stop, and a vehicle that shuts off on its own in a traffic lane is a much bigger problem than a locked one. None of this is a reason to panic, but it is why you should say the engine is running the moment you call rather than mentioning it later.
This is the single most useful piece of information you can give us about a lockout, and it costs you two words.
What to Do While You Wait
Stay with the vehicle if it is safe to do so. An unattended running car is an opportunity, and standing near it removes most of the risk. If staying is not safe — a dark, empty lot, a road with no verge — move somewhere lit and populated and tell us where you actually are.
If the car is running inside a garage or a partially enclosed space, open the space up if you can do so safely. Exhaust in an enclosed area is the one part of this situation that is genuinely dangerous to people rather than merely expensive.
Do not try to force a window or a door. A running car with the alarm system live is the worst possible candidate for an improvised entry, and a damaged door will not stop the engine either.
And check the passenger doors and the tailgate before anything else. Cars are locked less comprehensively than people assume in the moment, and a fair number of these calls end with the caller finding an open rear door while still on the phone.
How the Job Is Done
Mechanically it is the same as any other door lockout: an air wedge opens a few millimetres at the top of the door frame, and a coated reach tool goes through to work the interior handle or the unlock button. The engine running changes the urgency, not the technique.
The one practical difference is the alarm. On a running vehicle the horn is more likely to sound when the door opens, and it stops as soon as the key is back in your hand.

Should I call 911 instead?
Only if someone is inside. If a child, an elderly person or a pet is locked in the running vehicle, call 911 immediately and do not wait for a locksmith. If the car is empty, emergency services will generally not open it and calling them first only costs you time.
Will the car run out of fuel before you get there?
Almost certainly not. A modern engine idles at a low fuel burn, and unless the tank was already near empty you have hours rather than minutes. It is still not a situation to leave sitting.
Can you turn the engine off once the door is open?
You can, immediately — once the door is open the keys are back in your hand and the car is yours again. There is nothing special to do.
My car locked itself with the engine running. How?
Some vehicles auto-lock when they detect motion or after a set time, and on push-to-start cars the fob being inside the cabin is enough for the car to consider itself secure. It is a design behaviour rather than a fault, and it catches delivery and rideshare drivers constantly.
